Caption: Kamov's Ka-8 helicopter. This helicopter was designed by the Soviet aviation engineer Nikolai Kamov (1902-1972). Kamov built his first autogyro in 1929, and this led to his later helicopter designs. The Ka-8, first flown in 1947, was a single-seat helicopter that used an alcohol-fuelled engine. The pilot was Mikhail Gurov, and the test flight led to Kamov gaining official approval from the Soviet government to build helicopters.
