Caption: Columbus' ship, the Santa Maria. Woodcut illustration from the book Epistola Christafor Columbi (1494) depicting a ship thought to be the Santa Maria. Columbus (1451-1506) made his famous journey across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, failing to find the East Indies but discovering the West Indies instead. The Santa Maria was his flagship, yet only displaced about 100 tons. The other two ships in his fleet, the Nina and the Pinta were even smaller.
