Caption: Diving history. Helmet of a diver as he enters the water at the turn of the 20th century. His suit is made of rubberised cloth and is fully watertight. Air is supplied to him through an air line (dark, to lower right) running from a pump on the ship, and he is wearing a brass helmet with glass portholes. To counteract the weight of the helmet, he is wearing weighted boots (not seen). Due to this, such suits were known as "heavy-footers". Photographed off Marseilles, France.
