Caption: Diving history. Diver and his support team at the turn of the 20th century. One of his team, at right, is holding his heavy brass helmet with glass portholes. The diver (second from the left) is wearing his watertight suit of rubberised cloth. Air was supplied to the diver through air lines that ran from a pump on a ship. To counteract the weight of the helmet, the suit included weighted boots (not seen). Due to this, such suits were known as "heavy-footers". Photographed in Marseilles, France.
