It commemorates the Portuguese navigators of the 15th and 16th centuries who found new lands across the oceans in the Age of Discovery. Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) is at the front of the monument. He organised and financed voyages of discovery that found the sea-route to India around Africa.
