Caption: Morse code receiver. Engraving of a device for printing telegraph messages, devised by American inventor Samuel Morse in the 1840s. When a message was to be received, the weight (bottom left) was released turning the mechanism and feeding a strip of paper from a reel (Z). Electrical telegraph signals coming in from wires (a & b) energised electromagnets (H), which pulled down the iron or steel plate above them. By means of a pivoted lever, this raised the print head (W) which placed indentations in the paper strip which could be read. Morse devised a code which represented each alphabetical letter by a series of short ("dots") and long ("dashes") pulses.
