Caption: Telegraph office. Coloured historical artwork of telegraph operators at Valencia Island, Republic of Ireland, communicating with the steamship Great Eastern. The operator at right is tapping out a message on an electric transmitter. The operator at left is receiving a message, which is being imprinted onto a strip of paper. Batteries are seen in boxes at lower right. Electric telegraphy involves the transmission of coded information by wire or radio waves. Early receivers employed a stylus controlled by an electromagnet. The stylus imprinted code onto a strip of paper in response to the signal being transmitted. Taken from the Illustrated London News, 1855.
