Caption: Morse transmitter on board a ship. A telegraph operator would use this handset to tap out a code to send an electrical signal through a wire. Short and long electrical signals are used to represent the dots and dashes of the Morse code. In this way a message would be transmitted to a receiver where it would be decoded.
