Caption: Morse telegraphy machine with its operator. This equipment, dating from the 1880s, is used to receive morse code signals. The operator records the dots and dashes on a hand-driven paper tape, whilst transcribing the message onto paper. Samuel Morse developed a code where each alphabetical letter was represented by a series of short (dots) and long (dashes) pulses.
