Caption: Alcohol-filled thermometers, invented around 1641 probably by Ferdinand 11 of Tuscany, and used by the Accademia del Cimento in Florence during experimentation. The calibration marks on the stems consisted of small glass balls fused to the thermometers at the appropriate place.
