Caption: Goldingham's pendulum expedition. British scientists setting up camp on the small island of Gaunsah Lout, in the Indian Ocean, near the equator. This expedition, which sailed from Madras, India, in 1821, aimed to measure the characteristics of pendulums in various locations and at various heights. The equatorial measurements were carried out at Gaunsah Lout. The expedition was led by the British astronomer John Goldingham (1767-1849), head of the Madras Observatory. The measurements allowed values such as the density and size of the Earth to be determined with improved accuracy.
