Caption: Three illustrations of Luigi Galvani's experiment on frog muscle and electricity conducted in 1791. The illustration on the left shows contact via a metal rod between two dishes of water bridged by the frog's spine; the middle is the same using two damp cloth mats and the right one shows a broken metal rod which can be brought together into contact. The result was that the muscles in the frog's leg twitched indicating the presence of electricity. Galvani believed it resided in the muscle and declared for animal electricity. Some years later Volta showed that the electricity was in fact set up by two metal rods in contact.
