Caption: Gilbert's book on magnetism. Title page of the 1633 edition of De Magnete by the English physician and natural philosopher William Gilbert (1544-1603). The text is in Latin. Originally published in 1600, this book is often regarded as the first great work of science to be published in England. The full title of the work is De Magnete, Magneticisque Corporibus, et de Magno Magnete Tellure (On the Magnet and Magnetic Bodies, and on That Great Magnet the Earth). The author's name (Guilielmo Gilberto) follows the title, along with a reference to him as a physician from London. The text also names Wolfgang Lochman, the publisher of this edition.
