Caption: Theodolite. Historical artwork of a theodolite designed by Jesse Ramsden (1735-1800) in 1787 for the Royal Society. A theodolite is used to measure horizontal and vertical angles. Here there are two telescopes: the one at top centre for vertical angles and the one at centre left for horizontal ones. Accurate triangulation for map making was made possible by its use.
