Caption: Sand whirlwind, historical artwork. Caravan of people, horses and camels quickly moving through the Eurasian steppe (located between Russia and China) as a large sand whirlwind forms. Sand whirlwinds, or 'dust devils', usually arise when desert thermal heating creates localized vortices which then swirl the fine sand up to great heights. Artwork published in The Atmosphere, by Camille Flammarion (1873).
