Caption: Urania. Artwork of Urania, the Greek goddess of astronomy. In mythology Urania was one of the nine Muses, goddesses who were daughters of Zeus (king of the gods) & Mnemosyne (the goddess of memory). The Muses presided over all sciences and arts, and were supposed to inspire philosophers, poets and musicians. The Muses sat near the throne of Zeus and sang of his greatness, of the origin of the Earth, and of the deeds of great heroes. The Muses were worshipped throughout ancient Greece. Image drawn by R. Earlom (1742-1822).
