Caption: Whirlpool Galaxy. Illustration of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51, NGC 5194) made by Sir John Herschel (1792-1871) in the 1840s. The irregular galaxy NGC 5195 is at upper left. The drawing was made using an 18 inch reflector of 20 foot focal length. Herschel spent much of his life studying the stars, planets and nebulae. The Whirlpool Galaxy lies in the constellation of Canes Venatici. North is at top.
