Caption: Drawing of Saturn by William Rutter Dawes. Reverend William Rutter Dawes (1799-1869) drew this image of Saturn on 29th November 1850. This was the date he discovered that the planet had an inner ring, which he called the Interior Obscure Zone, and needed to make a record of his discovery. He had observed this new detail using an achromatic refractor telescope with an aperture of about 16cm (6.33 inches).
