Caption: Eclipse in 1870. Watercolour of a total eclipse of the sun in Andalucia, Spain, in 1870. This was painted by Paul Jacob Naftel, who was employed as official artist on the British expedition to Andalucia, Spain to view the 1870 eclipse. The painting shows members of the expedition viewing the eclipse with telescopes at the moment of totality (when the Sun's surface is completely obscured by the moon). Only the corona (the halo of light around the eclipsed sun) is weakly illuminating the area, making the scene appear moonlit.
