Caption: Map of the Moon by the Italian astronomer Francesco Fontana (1580-1656), published in 1646 in Novae Coelestium Terrestriumque. The map shows the main impact craters, rays spreading out from the larger craters, and the darker volcanic rock of the lunar maria. The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610, and then developed further during the 17th century as telescopes improved.
