Caption: Lunar crater Eratosthenes, as depicted in an 1851 model of the Moon, constructed by the British amateur astronomer Henry Blunt. This model was an electrotype copy of a plaster replica of this part of the Moon's surface. The model was based on observations Blunt made of the Moon with his telescope. The main crater is 45 kilometres across. Models like this one were displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610, and then developed further during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries as telescopes improved.
