Caption: Solar eclipse over london. Print of a scene of London in 1748, with three diagrams explaining the forthcoming solar eclipse. This engraving by Joseph Walker was published in 1748 for the Universal Magazine. The print was meant to inform Londoners of the causes and appearance of a solar eclipse that would occur on 14th July 1748, on the Julian calendar (25 July on the modern Gregorian calendar). The eclipse was total in northern Scotland but only partial in London.
