Caption: Child crawling. High-speed photographic sequence of a naked girl crawling on the floor. This sequence, by the British-American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904), is from the book Animal Locomotion (1887). The action runs from left to right from the top left and the girl is seen from three angles. Muybridge pioneered the use of high-speed photography and employed novel techniques to study animal and human locomotion. He began his work on high-speed photography when he was commissioned to discover whether galloping horses have all of their feet off the ground at certain times. He proved that they did.
