Caption: Water pumps. Drawings of water pumps made by Francesco di Martini (1439-1501). The designs were published in the Traffato di Architecture in 1475. This machinery, although complicated, would have been practical in use. In these designs, he pre-dated Leonardo da Vinci's (1452-1519) work in similar fields. Da Vinci and di Martini are thought to have worked together on some projects after the publication of this work.
