Matzeliger's lasting machine. Diagram illustrating the workings of the lasting machine invented by Jan Ernst Matzeliger (1852-1889) in the USA. A lasting machine is used to create the shape and structure of a shoe and bind it to its sole. The illustration includes the patent number (274,207) and date (20 March 1883), and also includes the inventor's signature (lower right). The title "Achievements In Freedom" refers to the invention being considered one of the achievements of the recently freed slaves. Though Matzeliger was born in Dutch Guiana, he was dark-skinned and treated as an African-American. His invention revolutionised shoe-making.
