Caption: Rat catcher with a ferret, inside a building, next to a radiator. The domesticated ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was bred from the polecat thousands of years ago, and has long been used for hunting. Its long thin body enables this carnivorous animal to burrow into narrow spaces after rodents and other pests. This photograph, which was taken in the period from the 1890s to the 1930s, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
