Caption: Bat radar-guided bomb (centre) mounted beneath the wing of a PB4Y Privateer bomber. Developed by the US Navy, this bomb was designed to glide on its fixed wings after release, using a radar homing device to locate and track its target. A controllable tail elevator (at rear of the missile) was used by the onboard autopilot system to steer towards the target. The Bat missile, the first fully automatic guided missile, entered service in April 1945, and was successfully used to sink several Japanese ships. Photographed on 12th December 1945.
