Caption: Otis's safety elevator patent. Patent drawing, dated 15th January 1861, of the safety elevator design by the US inventor Elisha Graves Otis (1811-1861). Safety brakes (upper right) would spring outwards and latch onto the serrated edges of the lift shaft if the cable broke. Otis had invented this safety brake in 1852. The first working model was installed in 1857, and the company that his sons founded would become the leading manufacturer of electric elevators. This is patent number 31,128 issued by the US Patent Office. Otis's signature is at bottom right.
