Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Giardia lamblia (green), a parasitic flagellate protozoan which causes the disease lambliasis (giardiasis). It is seen here attched by means of sucking discs to microvilli in the human small intestine. Microvilli are tiny sub- projections of the larger villi which project from the intestinal wall. Microvilli and villi serve to maximise the absorptive capacity of the intestines by increasing the surface area over which it occurs. Infestations by Giardia reduces absorption & may lead to diarrhoea. Magnification: x1190 at 35mm size.
