Caption: Light micrograph of a group of unicellular flagellate protozoans, Euglena sp. Euglenoids are commonly found in stagnant freshwater, although some species inhabit terrestrial, brackish or marine environments. Many euglenoids resemble the green algae in their feeding habits, obtaining nourishment through the process of photosynthesis. These species contain light sensitive chlorophyll pigments, which on exposure to light initiate a sequence of chemical reactions culminating in the formation of sugar from carbon dioxide. Euglenoids move by means of flagellae (typically two). Magnification: x60 at 35mm size.
