Caption: Light micrograph of colonies of Volvox containing several asexual daughter colonies. Volvox is an organism that lies between the plant and animal kingdom, being variously classified with the green algae (plant) or flagellates (animal). The colony contains from hundreds to thousands of cells arranged at the surface of a watery matrix. The individual cells have two flagella and eyespots. They reproduce both asexually and sexually. In the former case cells in the rear of the colony divide to form daughter colonies. Once released the parent colony dies. In the latter case male and female gametes are produced and a sexual union occurs. Magnification: x17 at 6x6cm size.
