Caption: Light micrograph of a field of Euglena viridis, a flagellate protozoan (one-celled organism) common in stagnant and slow-moving water. The flagellates are the most primitive protozoans because they resemble both plants and animals. As seen here, E. viridis contains the green pigment chlorophyll and is thus able to produce energy by photosyn- thesis like plants; but it can also absorb organic substances dissolved in the water. If deprived of sunlight, it loses its green pigment and survives solely on dissolved nutrients. The flagella used for movement can be seen (hair-like) in some specimens. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
