Caption: Dinoflagellate. Light micrograph of a single marine dinoflagellate. Found in both freshwater and saltwater, dinoflagellates are single-celled protozoa that float in the water column as plankton. Spines assist with this floatation; dinoflagellates usually have two flagellae and thus are also capable of self-propulsion. The colouring and poisoning of seawater in "Red tides" is due to some species of dinoflagellate. Magnification: unknown.
