Caption: Trypanosoma sp. Colour scanning electron micrograph of a tangle of unidentified trypanosomes. These are protozoan (single-celled) parasites. In Africa, Trypanosoma brucei spread by tsetse flies is the cause of sleeping sickness. The organisms multiply and spread to the bloodstream, lymph nodes, heart and brain causing fever, lassitude, coma and death if drug treatment is not given. In South America Trypanosoma cruzi is spread by assassin bugs and causes Chagas' disease. Symptoms include swelling of the lymph nodes and fever, and the heart may be damaged. Magnification:x2,000 at 6x7cm size. x6360 at 8x10 inch size.
