Caption: Dinoflagellate shell. Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of part of the shell of a dinoflagellate Peridinium gathinense. Dinoflagellates are one- celled protozoans found floating as marine and freshwater plankton. Here, a lattice-like pattern is seen on the shell, with many pores perforating the surface. The shell varies in structure between species, forming an outer skeleton made of plates. Usually two flagellae lie in grooves on the shell and they propel the organism in a circling motion. The shell may also have spines for floatation. Dinoflagellates mass in the sea to form Red Tides. Magnification: x9,400 at 8x10 inch size.
