Caption: Trichomonas vaginalis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of two parasitic protozoans Trichomonas vaginalis. They are the cause of sexually transmitted disease in humans. These pear-shaped organisms are 15-20 microns in length. Four flagellae arise from the blunt end (lower left) and there is an undulating membrane down one side. They infect the genito-urinary tracts of both sexes: in men this is usually symptomless, but in women vaginal infection may cause severe irritation and a foul-smelling discharge. Transmission is commonly, but not always, through sexual intercourse. Magnification: x3000 at 5x7cm size.
