Caption: Trichomonas vaginalis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the parasitic protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. This single-celled organism causes sexually transmitted disease in humans. This pear-shaped organism is 15-20 microns in length. It propels itself with rod-like flagellae and there is an undulating membrane down one side. It infects the genito-urinary tracts of both sexes: in men this is usually symptomless, but in women vaginal infection may cause severe irritation and a foul-smelling discharge. Transmission is commonly, but not always, through sexual intercourse. Magnification: x4500 at 6x6cm size.
