Caption: Euglena sp. Watercolour artwork of the pond- dwelling Euglena sp., a protozoan. This single- celled organism has a tail-like flagellum for locomotion (at centre left), attached within the reservoir (light green oval, at centre left). A contractile vacuole (blue) maintains the water balance by expelling fluid from the reservoir. Below is a stigma, or eye spot (red), for locating light for photosynthesis. The cytoplasm is green due to the large number of photosynthetic chloroplasts that form starch using sunlight. This food is stored in paramylum granules (purple spheres). The large nucleus (purple, at upper right) contains genetic material.
