Caption: Trichomitopsis protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Trichomitopsis sp. protozoan (single-celled animal). This protozoan inhabits the guts of termites, helping them to digest wood. Protozoa such as this are being used in biotechnology research at Axiva (part of Aventis) based in Frankfurt, Germany. They are being studied to see if they can be used to produce useful biologically active molecules such as enzymes, antibiotics and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Magnification unknown.
