Caption: Euglena gracilis protists. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Euglena gracilis protists. These organisms possess a unique combination of plant and animal characters. Like the algae, E. gracilis is photosynthetic, possessing the pigments chlorophyll a and b. It uses these to capture light energy from the Sun, with which it synthesises food in the same way as many plants. It is also, like many protozoa, an active swimmer, moving rapidly by beating its long, whip-like flagellum. E. gracilis is therefore considered to be both an alga and a protozoa and is classified accordingly. Magnification: x1520 at 6x7cm size.
