Caption: Giardia sp. protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Giardia sp. protozoan (green), the cause of the disease giardiasis in humans. This parasite infects the small intestine, attaching to the intestinal lining using its sucking discs (not seen). Giardiasis is most common in tropical areas, being spread by direct contact with an infected individual or through contaminated food or water. Symptoms include abdominal cramps and swelling, with diarrhoea and vomiting. Severe cases may be treated with antibiotic drugs. Magnification unknown.
