Caption: Foraminiferan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Globigerina sp. This marine protozoan lives near the surface of the sea and constitutes one type of the sea's plankton. It constructs a delicate, multi- chambered shell around itself, from which emerge spiny appendages. The purpose of these appendages is not fully understood. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
