Caption

Trichonympha protozoan. Light micrograph of Trichonympha sp., a type of flagellated protozoan. Trichonyhmpa inhabits the intestines of termites, with which it has a symbiotic relationship. The protozoan helps to digest the wood that the insect eats, in return receiving shelter within its body and a regular supply of food. The protozoan propels itself by beating long, thin flagella that surround its body. Trichonympha passes from one termite to another by passing out of the body as cysts in the termite's faeces, which may then be ingested by another termite.
