Caption: Dendrocometes protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Dendrocometes paradoxus protozoan (single-celled animal). It lives on the gills of freshwater fish and feeds by catching passing particles using its branching tentacles. Protozoa such as this are being used in biotechnology research at Axiva (part of Aventis) in Frankfurt, Germany. They are being studied to see if they can be used to produce useful biologically active chemicals such as enzymes, antibiotics and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).
