Caption: Paramecium protozoa. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two Paramecium caudatum protozoa on filaments (green) of Oscillatoria sp. blue-green algae. P. caudatum are single-celled micro-organisms. They are covered in numerous cilia, hair-like structures that are used for propulsion and to waft food particles into the mouth. The food is moved along a groove in their surface into the round oral cavity (black). Paramecium protozoa are aquatic. P. caudatum is found mainly in stagnant ponds, feeding on bacteria and on plant material. Magnification: x320 when printed 10cm high.
