Caption: Ciliate protozoan, probably Stylonychia sp., light micrograph. This ciliate protozoan inhabits freshwater and moist soil, where it feeds mainly on bacteria and other small micro-organisms. It moves by beating its cilia, hair-like extensions on its body. Those around its mouth are also used to waft prey into the mouth. Darkfield illumination. Magnification: x500 when printed 10cm wide.
