Caption: Light micrograph of an unidentified species of amoeba showing the presence of three pseudopodia, modifications made to the shape of the cytoplasm in order that the animal may move and feed. The pseudopodia extend like three legs towards the bottom of the image. Just how they are formed is still unclear. The cytoplasm of amoebas is divided into an inner, fluid region (endoplasm) and an outer gel-like region (ectoplasm). The interaction of these zones may be involved in controlling the protoplasmic streaming that produces the pseudopodia. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 3.5, page 45.
