Caption: Light micrograph of two amoebae, Amoeba proteus, meeting and touching each other with their numerous pseudopodia (false feet). The pseudopodia are finger-like extensions of the cell cytoplasm, used both in locomotion and feeding. Feeding occurs by phagocytosis. A pseudopod flows out and engulfs small organisms and is then reabsorbed into the cell body, where the victim is digested by enzymatic action within a food vacuole. The dark spot seen within each amoeba is the cell nucleus. Magnification: x160 at 35mm size.
