Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified species of marine foraminiferan, an amoeboid protozoan. Foraminiferans secrete tiny, perforated shells of chitinous, calcareous or siliceous matter, sometimes strengthened by adhering particles of chalk or sand, or spicules from sponges. The various species exhibit a wide variety of shell design, with differing numbers of chambers, variation in size and pattern of surface pores & sculpturing. Foraminiferans are found exclusively in the sea or in salt water lakes. Some species live on the sea or lake bottom, while others are planktonic. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
