Caption: Radiolarian. Light micrograph of the radiolarian Lithoptera mulleri. This single-celled amoeboid protozoan is found in marine plankton. Lithoptera mulleri is the type of radiolarian belonging to the sub-order: Acantharia. These have a complex internal skeleton composed of spicules of strontium sulphate. Here, at the end of spicules, there are elaborate extensions. The cell contents (yellow) occur around the central skeleton of spicules and consists of a vacuolated and buoyant protoplasm. Radiolaria float at various depths in the water column; they are very abundant in the oceans. Magnification: unknown.
